Sometimes you just catch lightning in a bottle; this is one of those times. James Goss has written a story that exists in a very specific moment in time; when movies went from silent to ‘talkies’. When you get a time like that there is a natural fear from those involved in silent film to draw on as a story. This is just fun from beginning to end.

In the last of this run of 5th Doctor (Peter Davison) adventures with Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) and Tegan (Janet Fielding) the Tardis experiences a psychic attack and Adric and Tegan are taken. The Doctor and Nyssa on the trail find themselves on the planet Zaltys where the inhabitants have disappeared under strange circumstances. Adric and Tegan find themselves separated and facing challenges of their own whilst the Doctor & Nyssa look for their friends whilst trying to deal with treasure seekers who are plundering this ‘planet of the dead’.

Mild Spoilers!
In TV Torchwood I loved how they fleshed out what to begin with were mere supporting parts. PC Andy becoming a sergeant and a proper ally to the team and not just the comic relief that got them into places as a cop sometimes.
So it was also with Gwen’s long suffering husband Reece played brilliantly by Kai Owen. He felt more and more like part of the team and whereas Miracle Day wasn’t everyone’s favourite adventure; he really shined in it and had a lot to do.

It was so bitter sweet listening to this one. Knowing with each world we were hearing the last performance of the War Doctor and what I think is the last of John Hurt at Big Finish.

At a lean 37 minutes this is a shorter trip than usual for this range. Writer George Mann takes you quickly into the story to make the most of the time we have by having the Doctor sense the nature of the problem. This does feel somewhat jarring, but once I got into the possibilities this story offers I started to enjoy it.

I really have to hand it to the writers of the new Big Finish audio’s for really nailing the motives and ‘USP’ behind each character in the new ‘5th Doctor, Nyssa, Tegen & Adric’ series and Phil Mulryne really raises the bar in this respect.
