Review: The War Doctor. Vol 4 – Casualties of War

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

It was so bitter sweet listening to this one. Knowing with each world we were hearing the last performance of the War Doctor and what I think is the last of John Hurt at Big Finish.

dwtwd04_casualtiesofwar_1688x1500“The Daleks are coming and when they get here, they will dive on this city. They will fill the air with death & screams, with white hot weapons, fire that burns so brightly it incinerates the tears off you cheeks. Minutes, that’s all it’ll take. Minutes to see everything you ever loved turn to blacked meat and cracked bones.” Continue reading

Review: Short Trips – Gardeners Worlds

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

At a lean 37 minutes this is a shorter trip than usual for this range. Writer George Mann takes you quickly into the story to make the most of the time we have by having the Doctor sense the nature of the problem. This does feel somewhat jarring, but once I got into the possibilities this story offers I started to enjoy it.

Review: Doctor Who – The Contingency Club

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

I really have to hand it to the writers of the new Big Finish audio’s for really nailing the motives and ‘USP’ behind each character in the new ‘5th Doctor, Nyssa, Tegen & Adric’ series and Phil Mulryne really raises the bar in this respect.978-1-78178-793-9 Continue reading

Review: The Invisible Man

In Memory of Sir John Hurt

1940 – 2017

Well of course Big Finish are doing H.G Wells. As some of the best story tellers of the day, why wouldn’t they produce the works of one of the greatest imaginations of all time?! Continue reading

Review: Doctor Who – The Eternal Battle

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

The writing partnership of Cavan Scott and Mark Wright return to Big Finish with the 4th Doctor adventure, The Eternal Battle (the kind of title that sounds like it should have been done before).978-1-78178-711-3The thing I am struck by with these guys is the fact that I never feel like it’s a Scott & Wright book / audio / any other projects as you might with other writers. I find more importantly; I get a great story that fits perfectly in the style of the Doctor they are writing in and then when I go to look at who wrote it, I then think, of course, they are great writers. With Cavan Scott I think he is particularly good at finding angles on the Doctors that sometimes adds and enhances the character but fits in with them. Continue reading

Review –  Short Trips: The World Beyond The Trees

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

I’ve said before in reviews for ‘Short Trips’ how I feel it is a difficult and brave thing to try to fit a whole story that would usually get 2 hours in Big Finish into 40 minutes. Even the TV show gets 45 minutes. So I had just one thought when I saw the Jonathan Barnes story ‘The word beyond the Trees’ was 34.25; what balls!

Review: Torchwood One – Before the Fall

Review by Doctor Squee (Host of Gallifrey Stands Podcast)

If you had told me a few years back I would be looking forward to a Torchwood Big Finish release as much as a Doctor Who, I wouldn’t have believed it. Sure the TV show was great; but it’s always Doctor Who first. But Big Finish have done such an amazing job with the Torchwood range as to make it up there with their finest Doctor Who releases.978-1-78703-008-4-1 Continue reading
