I love a little twist on the formatting that Big Finish do and again they have done it with these 2 interlinking stories in one release. Each getting an hour. So you get the pace of a modern 1 hour drama, cliffhangers in the middle and 2 stories that are different but one builds on the other. And in this way you technically get a 4 parter of sorts too

Death at Christmas is the second seasonal Doctor Who audio drama to be produced, written and directed by Doctor Squee of the Gallifrey Stands Podcast following last years The Time Trap.
As the Doctor & companion Orla head back to Earth for her Dad’s funeral, they reminisce on how they met. The Doctor had just regenerated and found himself crashing into Orla’s life. Meanwhile the new health minister is unveiling a drug that could be the cure for Orla’s Dad’s cancer. But is this cure too good to be true, or could it be deadlier than the cancer itself? Added to this, is one of the Doctors oldest enemies manipulating it all from behind the scenes and if so can the Doctor pull it together after the change to stop him?

Right from the beginning of this story we are faced with a 5-person Tardis crew: The Doctor, Ian Chesterton (Both played by William Russell), Vicky (Maureen O’Brien), Barbara (Jemma Powell) & Jospa (James Joyce). But who is Jospa? I liked this dynamic start of a new traveller being part of the team as we go in.

I am always amazed at how many different types of storytelling Big Finish comes up with; Two hour stories divided up into episodes, hour long adventures, box sets with 3 or 4 interlinking hour long stories and short trips. Then they throw into the mix the 4 half-hour stories in one release!

When you have a story called ‘A Full Life’ read by Matthew Waterhouse as Adric; when the one thing you know about Adric is he didn’t have a full life you know you’re in for a story that is probably going to break your heart. This is that story!
