Horror Month – June 2015
Here is our review of one of the big summer horror releases – Insidious Chapter 3 by co-editor Lewis Mainwaring
This is the directorial debut from Leigh Whannell (writer of Insidious trilogy & SAW I, II & III).The third chapter of this film franchise takes the form of a prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family. This instalment sees Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agreeing to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help the Brenner family (portrayed by Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
This instalment also see the return of fan favourites Angus Sampson and Leigh Whannell as Tucker and Specs. Other previously established characters that pop up in this prequel include Carl (Steve Coulter), The Bride in Black (Tom Fitzpatrick) and The Lipstick-face Demon.
When I first heard it was planned that this instalment would be a prequel instead of a continuation of Chapter 2’s ending I let out a sign of discontent. However after watching this movie I can honestly say it was the right move and provides the best instalment of the franchise.
Lin Shaye and Stefanie Scott’s performance in this movie is outstanding. The story was extremely griping and it made an effort to tie up loose ends and link to the previous films.
It has been a while since I have sat in a cinema and honestly felt scared by recent horror films (such as Unfriended, Poltergeist etc). This instalment will keep you on the edge of your seat and have you jumping and screaming till the very end!!!! I can honestly say I screamed myself during the films final sequence.
All I can say is “Get to the cinema now and roll on insidious Chapter 4” !!!!!!!!
