Wonder Woman 1984 was set to release on 5th June 2020 but in the light of the Coronovirus crisis, which has seen many cinemas around the world close their doors indefinitely, the release has been pushed back to August 14th 2020.
Director Patty Jenkins said in her tweet that they want the film to still be seen in cinemas; however that is in doubt with cinemas around the world closed indefinitely and many other 2020 releases such as Unversal’s ‘The Invisible Man’ and Pixar’s ‘Onward’ being released early to VOD. Onward will infact not reach cinemas and only be available on Disney+, VOD & Home Media.
“When we greenlit WW 1984 it was with every intention to be viewed on the big screen and are excited to announce that Warner Bros. Pictures will be bringing the film to theatres on August 14th. We hope the world will be in a safer and healthier place by then,”
says WB. Motion Picture Group Chairman Toby Emmerich.
Wonder Woman 1984 is based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
It is a sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman and is the ninth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).
The film is directed by Patty Jenkins, who wrote it with Geoff Johns and David Callaham from a story written by Johns and Jenkins.
It stars Gal Gadot in the title role, with Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Robin Wright in supporting roles.
The trailer made its debut at the Comic Con Experience 2019 (CCXP) in Brazil.
