Joel Scumacher, the director of many iconic films has sadly passed away after a year-long battle with cancer, his representatives have announced. He was 80 years old.
Schumacher started out his career as a window dresser and transferred his strong visual style to film where he at first worked as a costume designer on Woody Allen’s Sleeper (1973) and Paul Mazursky’s Blume in Love (1973) and wrote screenplays for the well-received Sparkle (1976), Car Wash (1976) and The Wiz (1978). One of the first features he directed was D.C. Cab (1983), starring Mr. T. His many credits as director included the ‘vampire’ horror comedy The Lost Boys (1987) which has become a cult favourite.
After Tim Burton helmed the first two Batman films starring Michael Keaton in 1989 and 1992, Warners entrusted Schumacher with the franchise, and he pumped up the visuals in Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997), infusing the movies with a more comic-book feel.
He also helmed the John Grisham thrillers The Client (1994) & A Time to Kill (1996); as well as the noir drama 8MM (1999), starring Nicolas Cage among many other credits over a long and varied career. He also directed a number of stand-out thrillers such as Falling Down (1993) starring Michael Douglas and Phonebooth (2003) with Colin Farrell.
He directed the musical adaption The Phantom of the Opera in 2004 and most recently he directed two episodes of Netflix show House of Cards in 2013.
