Following Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it’s spin off Angel taking to twitter to shared her experience working with Buffy creator Joss Whedon, James Marsters, has commented on the allegations.
Marsters wrote in a statement to Instagram:
“While I will always be honoured to have played the character of Spike, the Buffy set was not without challenges. I do not support abuse of any kind, and am heartbroken to learn of the experiences of some of the the cast. I send my love and support to all involved.”
Speaking last year on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You, he detailed an allegedly aggressive interaction he had with Whedon over his character’s popularity.
Marsters recalled:
“I came along, and I wasn’t designed to be a romantic character. But then the audience reacted that way to it,” he said. “And I remember [Whedon] backed me up against a wall one day, and he was just like, ‘I don’t care how popular you are, kid, you’re dead. You hear me? Dead. Dead!’
“And I was just like, ‘Uh, you know, it’s your football, man. OK,’”.
In the wake of the investigation into Whedon’s on set behaviour whilst working on the Justice League, Carpenter has accused Whedon of a hostile and abusive work environment with other cast members showing support and sharing their stories on social media including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Clare Kramer, Michelle Trachtenberg, Anthony Head, J. August Richards, Emma Caulfield & Amber Benson.
Earlier today responding to Carpenter’s original post, Eliza Dushku – who played Faith in the supernatural drama – posted on social media using the hashtag #IStandWithCharismaCarpenter.
