Ellen Burstyn to reprise her role in new ‘The Exorcist’ trilogy

It had been reported that Ellen Burstyn will also reprise her role in an upcoming reboot of ‘The Exorcist’ from Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Productions, in partnership with Universal and Peacock.; she starred as Chris MacNiel in the original 1973 film. Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton, One Night In Miami) is also set to star.

David Gordon Green (Halloween) was earlier tapped to direct the first of three planned movies. Universal and Peacock acquired the worldwide rights to create new IP based on The Exorcist franchise in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. The first film in the planned trilogy will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023. Universal are reportedly investing around $400million in the new trilogy and expecting great returns.

The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s The Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist III.

More recently, “The Exorcist” became a short-lived television series at Fox, which was surprisingly excellent and cleverly took place in the same world as the original classic. The series was cancelled after just two seasons.
