Jon Watts to produce Final Destination 6 for HBO Max

Fresh from the $1.5 billion–grossing (and growing) Spider-Man: No Way Home, filmmaker Jon Watts has signed on to produce Final Destination 6 for New Line Cinema.

Watts’ wife and partner, Dianne McGunigle, is also producing, alongside longtime Final Destination producers Craig Perry and Sheila Hanahan Taylor.

Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick (Scream 2022) are writing the screenplay based on a treatment by Watts. The film is set to debut on HBO Max.

Watts said in a statement:

“Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of ‘Final Destination’ from the very beginning. So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.”

Perry added:

“Jon and Dianne’s passion for the series is only matched by how much fun they are to work with. Sheila and I couldn’t be more excited to have their creative energy driving this latest installment in the ‘Final Destination’ franchise with New Line. With Guy and Lori’s inspired execution of Jon’s original idea, we have a movie that audiences are gonna love.”

“Final Destination” was one of the most durable horror franchises of the 2000s. In each of the five installments (which spanned from 2000 to 2011), a small group of people who escape impending death after one individual (the protagonist) sees a sudden premonition and warns them about the mass-casualty accident that is about to happen. After avoiding their foretold deaths, the survivors are killed one by one in bizarre accidents caused by an unseen force creating complicated chains of cause and effect, resembling Rube Goldberg machines, and then read omens sent by another unseen entity in order to again avert their deaths.

The series is noteworthy among other horror films for its use of an antagonist that is not a stereotypical slasher or other physical being, but Death manifested, subtly manipulating circumstances in the environment with a design on claiming anyone who escapes their fated demise. The films have grossed $657 million worldwide to date.

In our interview with franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick in 2020 he stated that:

There will be a sixth one. It was in the works for real…it was really in the works before Covid hit. So that’s kind of obviously put everything on hold with development. So I think once…Hollywood kind of gets back into the groove of things, you know, they’ll start working on that again.
