Lady Gaga has confirmed her casting in Joker 2 by posting a musical teaser to social media.
The sequel, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, will star Gaga opposite Joaquin Phoenix. The teaser is set to “Cheek to Cheek,” which Gaga has famously covered in her music career alongside Tony Bennett.
The Joker 2 sequel starring Phoenix as the DC villain will be directed by Todd Phillips and we can expect a big media push from Warner Bros. after the 2019 debut of Joker, grossed around $1 billion in box office.
Phillips wrote the script with Joker co-writer Scott Silver.
Phoenix’s performance in the film won him multiple awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actor, a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Actor, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, known professionally as Lady Gaga, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress.
Having sold 170 million records as of 2018, Gaga is one of the world’s best-selling music artists and the only female artist to achieve four singles that sold at least 10 million copies globally. Her accolades include 13 Grammy Awards, 18 MTV Video Music Awards, 16 Guinness World Records, awards from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and recognition as Billboard’s Artist of the Year (2010) and Woman of the Year (2015).
She also ventured into acting, playing leading roles in the miniseries American Horror Story: Hotel (2015–2016), for which she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, and the critically acclaimed musical drama film A Star Is Born (2018). Her contributions to the latter’s soundtrack, which spawned the chart-topping single “Shallow”, made her the first woman to win an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Grammy Award in one year. Gaga returned to her dance-pop roots with her sixth studio album, Chromatica (2020), which yielded the number-one single “Rain on Me”. She followed this with her second collaborative album with Bennett, Love for Sale, and a starring role in the biographical crime film House of Gucci, both in 2021.
Warner Bros. will release “Joker: Folie à Deux” in theaters October 4, 2024.
The news of Joker 2’s official release date comes just as Warner Bros. are dealing with wide spread controversy for shelving the upcoming Batgirl movie.
