RuPaul’s Drag Race season 2 winner James Ross (Tyra Sanchez) has posted on his social media regarding a potential return to Drag Race.
Following RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 7 which saw past winners from the franchise returning to compete for the title “Queen of All Queens” many wondered if this format returned would we see the inclusion of “the other Tyra”.
In usual Tyra/James Ross fashion the post does not paint Rupaul, the show or the fandom in a good light!
Ross won the show back in 2010 under the stage name Tyra Sanchez and would go on to beat RuPaul’s now makeup artist Raven, as well as franchise favourite Jujubee for the crown. Ross retired from drag back in 2019 following a string of controversies including making terrorist threats against DragCon.
During the statement posted on his Facebook account Ross stated that:
“It really saddens me that we have to have this talk AGAIN.
Please stop wishing for something that will NEVER EVER happen again. Please stop messaging about a show I’ve made absolutely clear that I want NOTHING to do with. STOP wishing I’d magically appear in a new season. ITS NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. Y’all got who y’all wanted. You made your choice. Stand on your decisions. Leave me TF out of it. Stop rallying for a redemption storyline that I DO NOT WANT.
I’m not angry, nor upset. Just fed up with your ignorance.”
Ross also made further claims of racism behind the scenes of the popular show and that “Black queens” that have gone on to win recently such as Shea Couleé, Jaida Essence Hall and Symone have only won “because I made so much noise” of alleged racism.

In 2019, after a period of inactivity, Ross released an apology statement on his social media accounts, taking responsibility for his past actions. “I humbly apologize for the online behavior I have displayed in recent years,” he stated. “Though it represents emotions I may have felt, it does not represent my true character. I have failed you and I know that I am much better than that…. it’s not who I am and it is not who I choose to be.” In explaining the reason behind his behavior, he said that “The judgement, criticism, and opinions I received daily really affected my vibes and it began to control my environment… I was on an extreme roller coaster of emotions. So many ups and too many downs. Exhausted, I was just ready to get off the ride.”
Just over five months later, Ross publicly announced his decision to quit drag, stating on his official Instagram page, “For those asking, Tyra Sanchez has fulfilled her purpose in my life. I, James Ross, no longer want to be referred to as Tyra, Tyra Sanchez, her, she, girl, or queen.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race has turned into a worldwide phenomenon with fourteen seasons to date (as of 2022) and has inspired several spin-off series, including RuPaul’s Drag U, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race, along with spawning many international versions.
In addition three DragCons have been created: RuPaul’s DragCon LA, RuPaul’s DragCon NYC, and RuPaul’s DragCon UK. A RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! variety show in Las Vegas was established in 2020 with a corresponding television special.
