Warner Bros. is set to collaborate with Kenya Barris to write and direct Wizard of Oz, a reimagining of the fantasy classic, with his Khalabo Ink Society producing.
American film and television writer, producer, director, and actor Barris is best known as the creator of the ABC sitcom black-ish. Sheila Walcott is overseeing for the studio.
The project is being kept under wraps but is set to be a modern reimagining of the iconic 1939 musical.
The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. An adaptation of L. Frank Baum‘s 1900 children’s fantasy novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the film stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton.
The Wizard of Oz has become the source of many quotes referenced in contemporary popular culture. The film ranks often on critics’ lists of greatest films of all time, and is the most commercially successful adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s work.
This project is not the only ‘Oz’ project currently in development.
New Line Cinema, Temple Hill Entertainment and Wicked producer Marc Platt announced back last year that a new film version of the original book is in the works with Watchmen’s Nicole Kassell slated to direct the reimagining, which will have the option to include elements from the 1939 film.
Also Universal Pictures are set to release a two part film adaptation of Wicked is set to be released in 2024/2025.
