American actress, producer, and television director Shannen Doherty passes away at the age of 53 after losing her battle with breast cancer.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to People.

The 90210 star Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015, which had spread to her lymph nodes.

In February 2016, Doherty revealed that she was receiving anti-estrogen treatment to shrink the tumour and enable treatment by lumpectomy rather than mastectomy.  Due to the presence of multiple tumours a lumpectomy was not possible, and a single mastectomy was performed in May 2016.

Surgery revealed that some of the cancer cells may have spread beyond the lymph nodes. Because the cancer was more advanced than previously thought, Doherty underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy following surgery. On April 29, 2017, Doherty announced that her cancer was in remission.

Sadly on February 4, 2020, Doherty announced that a year ago, her cancer came back and she is now stage four.

Doherty will be remembered for her roles both on the big and small screen including Jenny Wilder in Little House on the Prairie (1982-1983), Maggie Malene in Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985), Kris Witherspoon in Our House (1986-1988), Heather Duke in Heathers (1988), Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990–1994 & 2008-2009), Prue Halliwell in Charmed (1998–2001), and BH90210 (2019).

Doherty appeared in the Viewaskewniverse twice appearing in Mallrats (1995) and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001).

In 2019 she appeared on Riverdale, to pay tribute to her beloved Beverly Hills, 90210 costar Luke Perry, who died of a stroke in March.
