From humble origins as a London fringe theatre play to its meteoric rise as the biggest cult film of all time, this is the definitive story of the Rocky Horror Show. With intimate access to its creator Richard O’Brien and other major players such as Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Lou Adler, the documentary explores what makes the play and film so singular: Its groundbreaking and transgressive themes, iconic performances and epic songs that took over popular culture.

Adding an extra personal layer to this film, Strange Journey is directed by Linus O’Brien, son of the legendary Richard O’Brien, creator of the cult phenomenon.
The documentary features new interviews from the film’s original cast including Tim Curry (Clue, It), Oscar winner Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise, Dead Man Walking), Barry Bostwick (Megaforce, Spin City), Patricia Quinn (Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, The Lords of Salem), and Nell Campbell (Great Expectations, Shock Treatment).
Celebrity fans such as Jack Black (A Minecraft Movie, School of Rock) and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Trixie Mattel also appear, sharing deeply personal reflections on Rocky Horror’s cultural impact.
There is no debating the legacy of ‘Rocky Horror’ as a cultural phenomenon that remains as relevant today as ever. Strange Journey brings us a fresh new perspective on the stage show, film and we hear the stories of how rocky came to be and it’s lasting legacy from the people that were there from the humble beginning. More than simply a documentary we get an incredibly personal insight into Richard O’Briens own journey with his sexuality and identity the feeds into the show and has gone on to inspire generations with their own journeys, some of which are featured.
This is the most in depth Rocky Horror documentary to date, covering everything from the early beginnings of the shows creators, it’s debut on the London stage, the transfer to the US and the film adaption as well as the fandom and legacy of the show starting with midnight screenings and leading to the audience participation shadow casts and fan conventions it has become so well known for today.
The only major omissions from the documentary are the shows spiritual but less successful sequel ‘Shock Treatment’ and Fox’s ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again’.
The story being told by creator Richard O’Briens own son offers the viewer unprecedented access and an incredibly personal viewpoint on the show and it’s legacy that might even offer new tidbits for die hard fans and remains compelling throughout it’s run time. As an extra special treat we get to see some of O’Briens original notes and hear him playing songs from the show alongside musical director Richard Hartley.
The director Jim Sharman and producer Lou Adler also feature heavily.
5/5 – A must see for both Rocky Horror aficionados and virgins alike!!!
