Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first female-led superhero film in the franchise.

The film is written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay.

Brie Larson stars as Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Set in 1995, the story follows Vers (Larson) as she becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the centre of a galactic conflict between two alien worlds.

Living as a Kree she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers.

With help from Nick Fury (Jackson), Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls’.

There are many action sequences set in space as well as 90s earth; complete with all the period-appropriate cultural references which add a real flavour to the film.

The film really kicks into gear when Carol is re-united with her old pilot buddy Maria (Lynch).

Maria’s daughter Monica (played by Akira Akbar) also provides a real human connection to our hero as she looks up to Brie Larson’s strong and powerful role-model in Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.

The digital de-aging of Jackson as Fury is very convincing and it is fun to see his character as well as Agent Coulson (Gregg) in a time before The Avengers.

There is excellent onscreen chemistry between Jackson and Larson in this movie which helps deliver both the comedic and emotional scenes.

Overall the films pace did derail at times but ultimately is a strong first effort for Marvel’s first Female-fronted film and has all the fun and joy we have come to know and love from the MCU. Larson’s performance in this film is a high point!
