New Batgirl set photo teases upcoming Robin connection

Production is currently underway on the upcoming DC Batgirl movie. Late last year, it was confirmed that Michael Keaton‘s Batman would be making an appearance in the film, alongside Leslie Grace‘s as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl.

As filming continues in Glasgow, fresh set photos has indicated that another regular to the batman universe will tie in.

The set photo from Batgirl, shows a mural of both Batman and Robin being put up for the film. The artistic rendering of Robin doesn’t showcase a specific actor, and has his lower face rubbed out with the vague outline of a Joker -esque smile on the left hand side.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl, from a script by Christina Hodson, the DC mainstay behind Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Flash. Kristin Burr is producing.

While plot details are under wraps, it is known that Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Gordon, will be the character behind the cape in this version. Gordon is the most established version of the Batgirl character and was first introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane.

It is unknown at this point whether the movie is set in the same universe as Batman and Batman Returns, or if its set entirely in its own universe and Keaton’s Batman is just popping in from across space and time.

J. K. Simmons will reprise the role of classic Batman character Commissioner James Gordon. Also set to feature in the film is Brendan Fraser as Garfield Lynns / Firefly: A sociopathic pyromaniac and Jacob Scipio in an undisclosed role.

In the comics, Robin is Batman’s sidekick.

The character’s first incarnation, Dick Grayson, debuted in Detective Comics #38 (April 1940). Conceived as a way to attract young readership, Robin garnered overwhelmingly positive critical reception, doubling the sales of the Batman titles. Robin’s early adventures included Star Spangled Comics #65–130 (1947–1952), the character’s first solo feature. He made regular appearances in Batman-related comic books and other DC Comics publications from 1940 through the early 1980s, until the character set aside the Robin identity and became the independent superhero Nightwing. As a team, Batman and Robin have commonly been referred to as the Caped Crusaders and the Dynamic Duo.

The character’s second incarnation, Jason Todd, first appeared in Batman #357 (1983). He made regular appearances in Batman-related comic books until 1988, when he was murdered by the Joker in the storyline “A Death in the Family” (1989). Jason later found himself alive after a reality-changing incident, eventually becoming the Red Hood.

The premiere Robin limited series was published in 1991, featuring the character’s third incarnation, Tim Drake, training to earn the role of Batman’s vigilante partner. After two successful sequels, the monthly Robin series began in 1993 and ended in early 2009, which also helped his transition from sidekick to a superhero in his own right.

In 2004 storylines, established DC Comics character Stephanie Brown became the fourth Robin for a short time before the role reverted to Tim Drake. Damian Wayne succeeds Drake as Robin in the 2009 story arc “Battle for the Cowl”.

Drake’s incarnation of Robin made headlines last year as the character came out as Bisexual.

Batgirl is scheduled to be released on HBO Max in 2022.
