Review: Doctor Who The Lost Stories – Return Of The Cybermen / The Doomsday Contract

Review by Jacob Licklider

When The Lost Stories was revived in 2019, listeners thought it could only be for a one-off run of two extra stories. Nobody really expected Big Finish Productions to announce the range to continue with more frequency than the occasional production, but only a few months later the announcement came that March 2021 would see the release of two stories featuring the Fourth Doctor, and last month a third release was announced from Russell T. Davies featuring the Sixth Doctor and Mel. The Sixth Doctor and Mel story may still be a long while off yet, but bringing Tom Baker back to The Lost Stories range is an excellent choice as he had only one release in the range: a box set featuring two stories, a six part story from Robert Banks Stewart and a four part adventure from Phillip Hinchcliffe. It is March 2021, nearly a year since the initial announcement, and Big Finish have made good on that release date. Return of the Cybermen and The Doomsday Contract have been released and the range is truly revived in a new form recovering previously abandoning Doctor Who scripts for a new audience to enjoy in a whole new way. Review: Doctor Who – Genetics of the Daleks (Time Lord Victorious)

Review by Michael Goleniewski

‘Genetics of the Daleks’ is perhaps the biggest surprise story in the whole of the Time Lord Victorious arc as it features the earliest Doctor involved in the entire saga so far and yet somehow happens to be one of the last stories timeline-wise in regards to how the Daleks themselves pertain to the big event. Its trailer makes it feel like ‘Alien’ with a lone pepper-pot instead of a xenomorph akin to how the recent final Eighth Doctor TLV audio was basically ‘Die Hard’ with a whole army of ‘pepper-pots’ at it’s disposal and the Doctor in the John McClane role. And similar to said audio, ‘Genetics’ delivers pretty much that exact premise albeit with a few twists along the way.

Review: Doctor Who – Out Of Time (Volume 1)

Review by Jacob Licklider

Out of Time is a release that’s production feels much like Big Finish Productions had an idea, and then decided ‘let’s do that idea because it’s fun’.  Billed and hyped for being the meeting between the Fourth and Tenth Doctors played by Tom Baker and David Tennant; Matt Fitton’s story really only sets out to be a bit of fun and does just that.

Review: Doctor Who – Shadow Of The Sun

Review by Jacob Licklider

Let’s all be honest, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused many industries, including the arts and avenues of entertainment, to grind to a halt; whilst there is plenty of misinformation about the
pandemic itself around. With television and film delays and potential cancellations, you would think that a small company like Big Finish Productions wouldn’t be able to keep up, but because they are small they’re able to keep going and find creative workarounds through the quarantines. Shadow of the Sun is the second release to come because of the pandemic and the first to feature a full cast. Continue reading
