Review: ‘You’re Gonna Die Tonight’ (Short – 2016)

YGDTReview by Jay Kay

Blended with a twisted sense of justice and a wicked narrative style that makes you change your stance on who is just and who is scum, comes the cat and mouse thriller short film from filmmaker Sergio Morceillo entitled “You’re Gonna Die Tonight” written by Alvaro Fuentes. Opening with little to no exposition to help the viewer understand a woman (Mónica Aragón) arriving at a home from a long night of wild, naughty and nasty fun. Barely standing, she is a product of lust, boozes and attitude by her own rules. With flashes of a sex/fetish club engulfing her pleasuring activities in the bathtub, her climax is disturbed by cell phone calls from a stranger who has eyes on what she is doing and how her threats are hollow as they pronounce to her “You’re Gonna Die Tonight”. As she emerges from the bathroom, the game intensifies with the killer who has entered her house and now is on the hunt for her. With each moment that goes by, the woman must defend her life and also understand the nature of the killer and his motive on why she has been targeted. Are they there to kill her or is there something more to their invasion? Continue reading

‘A Dozen Summers’ being released on DVD

http://dozensummersmovie.co.uk/wp-content/themes/fullscreen/themify/img.php?src=http://dozensummersmovie.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Background-Pic-5-1024x576.jpg&w=745&h=381&zc=1From British writer/director Kenton Hall; ‘A Dozen Summers‘  is described as two 12 year old girls who hi-jack a movie and turn it into a story about their lives. This is an interesting concept in and of itself but also consider the lead roles are played by Hall’s own daughters Scarlet & Hero Hall and Kenton himself plays their father in the film. The film starts with some wonderfully hilarious voice-over from Colin Baker (of Doctor Who fame) which sets the comedy bar high. Through-out there are ‘various fourth-wall moments’ and references to the many tropes and devices used by film-makers.

4/5 ‘Bold, Hopeful British indie comedy/drama at it’s best’

Review: A Tricky Treat (2015)

ATT“I think for me, every movie I get into has my DNA, my stamp, my signature and my style on it. I love to tell a story that have a purpose that have a strong message and will elevate the audience when they leave no matter.” – Filmmaker Patricia Chica

A lot can be captured, expressed and told in a minute… a critically acclaimed mind, soul and creative spirit like Patricia Chica’s can say so much in such a short amount of time. Whether it is the aspect of community, culture and music within the Montreal area with “Rockabilly 514”. The true reflections of the choices we make, the pleasures we are a part of and the terror of what the consequences may be with “Ceramic Tango” or the power of demons we carry and the aspects of life that we loose and have to cope with till end with “Serpent’s Lullaby”.

“Being a good director is knowing how to pick the good material,”
said Chica.

The 35 time film and television award winning creator continues to make a difference with film, art and the power to invoke. This was no different with the twisted and dark humour tale of justice, frights and irony in “A Tricky Treat”. Conceived originally as a segment of the 2015 “Blood Donation” PSA for the “Women in Horror” Movement, the tale originally called “Ripe N’ Bloody”, the short film packs a twisted message but overall it is three minutes of pure Halloween fun! ‘CyberPunkzzz’ Interview

By Jay Kay (Host of Horror Happens Radio Show)

We spoke to filmmakers Turner Stewart and Dionne Copeland about their first feature //CYBERPUNKZZ//!CP

“//CYBERPUNKZZ//” is a brave feature from a very talented group of filmmakers. After working on more than five short films including some very powerful and visual projects like “Computer Hearts” and “S.I.D.S.”, this seems like the natural progression. What made “//CYBERPUNKZZ//” the right first feature and where did this story idea come from of gangs, the internet, and freedom?

Turner: Making Punkzz as our first feature just makes sense. Actually, Computer Hearts was originally going to be feature-length but we cut it way down into the 20-minute version that everyone knows now, so going into our first feature this year feels like a natural and necessary progression. In a way Punkzz is sort of a conceptual sequel to Computer Hearts, with all the themes and style I explored in that film taken to the next level. I’ve been describing Punkzz as The Warriors meets Altered States, with a story and aesthetic filtered through the techno-body horror style seen in our previous work.

CSWb8qPVAAAKGjJDionne: Right now Turner and I actually have two feature film scripts that we’re itching to produce, the other one being a feature-length adaption of my recently completed short film, Inferno. The one that gets made first will honestly just come down to whichever one we can get the financing nailed down for. Both projects will make excellent feature films, and we’re just excited to start filming something Continue reading

Review: Good Samaritan (Short – 2014)

Review by Jay Kay (Host of Horror Happens Radio Show)

Good SamaritanIn a voyeuristic world that at any time someone could be watching you from your laptop, inside your car, from their window into your home perhaps even across a field comes the powerful tale of revenge, fear and dealing with guilt from FINAL DESTINATION and TAMARA scribe Jeffrey Reddick entitled the GOOD SAMARTIAN. Known for smart screenwriting that established one of the most successful film franchises in the last twenty years (FINAL DESTINATION series). Reddick takes the helm on this project writing and directing his first short film which focuses a sharp and dark eye on the news/multi-media spin machine’s perception of what is right and wrong in today’s society. The GOOD SAMARTIAN shows us the horror of a generation that would choose to not get involved rather than be able to help those in need. Continue reading

Review: Containment (2015)

Containment is a new British thriller from writer/director Neil McEnery-West and screenwriter David Lemon.

The film stars
Louise Brealey, Sheila Reid and Lee Ross.

containment1

In a similar vein to films such as Outbreak, Contagion and Attack the Block the film’s story follows a group of tenants stuck in a tower block as a bunch of government officials in HazMat suits seal off the area for no apparent reason. This really is all a set-up for the human stories of those involved which explores areas such as parental relationships, race, class and the elderly. This aspect of the film is at least compelling and ably played by the cast; another driving force of the film is the ‘US & Them’ relationship between the tenants and the Haz-mats though not really covering any new ground here. This film works better in the human story aspect.

The film is fairly well shot but again doesn’t really stand out visually and thriller aspect of this film doesn’t really hold up to expectation which is instead pinned on the story and drama. It plays like a taught thriller at times but ultimately is not successful in this aspect and is inconsistent.

Now available. in select cinemas and VOD in UK.
