Hurt: A Lengthy Labor of Halloween Havoc
Halloween is an interesting time that many people circle on their calendar. It is a time for letting loose, impersonating a fictions person or entity for a day, watching scary movies, giving out candy to the youngsters, or even going out with some friends to partake and participate in some Halloween-themed amusement park filled with haunted houses and sideshows. The parks were one of my favourites as it was fun to see my friends (and myself) receive various jump scares when various costumed ghouls would jump out at you from just about everywhere. Despite all the theatrical terror and menace, it was all in good fun. Hurt, a Halloween horror film provided by Zed Filmworks and distributed by Gravitas Ventures, provides a small-town Halloween fair that a soldier and his wife go back to as it was one of their regular haunts growing up. This time, however, the results are far different.

In the 1980’s, Mary Whitehouse, a staunch supporter of purity of what people could peruse in their own home with arrests of video merchants and artists in the wake of this moral panic. Ironically, in the 1970’s there was a British independent director by the name of Pete Walker who was infamous for his low-budget, graphic, and sadistic horror movies that, despite not being in the 72 videos that were deemed video nasties, troubled British censors. Walker delved into many genres such as erotic, detective, and thrillers. As it is the Halloween season, I will make my attempt to rank Mr. Walker’s horror films from the worst to the very best. Note that your results may vary. Let’s begin. Continue reading

Natural disasters are never a fun event. Growing up in tornado country, I’ve had my fair share of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornado watches and warnings. When I experienced a tornado, we had to huddle in the primary room in the house as there was no basement or cellar available. As the tornado ripped past our cottage, the vulnerability at the hands of mother nature along with its aftermath was something to behold. Produced by The Coven and distributed by IFC Midnight, We Need to Do Something gives us a taste of not only forces of nature and darkness that are beyond our humanity, but how a trapped family displays its dysfunction.
40 Years Ago visionary director Sam Raimi brought the The Evil Dead to life on our screens with his own unique visual style and mix of comedy and horror and his indie low-budget debut feature would go on to spawn two hugely successful sequels, a remake, TV show, comic books, video games, stage productions, countless merchandise and launched Bruce Campbell’s career as an action/genre hero as well as changing the face of the genre forever.

As previously reported David Gordon Green is moving on to The Exorcist franchise, helping to create an entire new trilogy that’ll serve as sequels to the original classic currently in development at Universal.
