‘Shooting Clerks’ (Kevin Smith biopic) teaser released!

Scottish production company Auld Reekie Media has released the first teaser trailer for their much anticipated biopic of writer/director Kevin Smith titled ‘Shooting Clerks‘. The film will focus on the production of his 1994 debut hit film Clerks as well as looking into the events that preceded and followed it.

Director Christopher Downie and Producer Brett Murray have previously worked on several Kevin Smith themed projects; most notably the short ‘Get GREEDO!‘ which was posted on Smith’s own ‘Smodco Internet Television‘ YouTube channel.

The cast features actors portraying Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes & many other actors/others involved with the making of Clerks but interestingly also includes cameo and small-role appearances from many original Clerks cast members including Brian O’Hallaran, Marilyn Ghigliotti, Scott SchiaffoErnie O’Donnell and many others associated with Smith. Smith himself is expected to narrate the film.

Production was split between UK & US with principal photography taking place in Scotland while key locations were filmed by a 2nd Unit in and around New Jersey, USA. Funding for for film came from several crowd-funding campaigns as well as individual investors.

Please follow the film-makers Facebook & Twitter for updates on the release of this film.

This release is well timed following the release of Smith’s horror/thriller Tusk, the announcement that the second sequel to Clerks, Clerks III will shoot this year and also amidst the news that Smith is putting together a sequel to his 1995 follow-up film Mallrats.

Review: Board To Death (Short – 2015)

From new director Dammie Akinmol and writer/cinematographer Kazi Zaman
comes a brand new British noir short; Board to Death. It is produced by a collective called ‘Broken Lens Productions’.

MV5BMjIyMDUyMDQ1N15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwODA5NzkxNDE@__V1__SX1377_SY679_We follow a husband (Joshua Expositio) who is incredibly paranoid and vengeful. He suspects his wife (Victoria Ashford) of being unfaithful and we follow him as he hunts down those who have he feels disrespected his wife and his marriage. Performed mostly as voice-over; Expositio does a great job of creating the seeds of a complex character that is one part villain and one part victim in a larger game that we discover later in the piece.

This alone is enough to maintain interest; supported by some other pop-up characters that range from bar-tenders to priests. The flow is also propelled by a constant techno/ambient score that carries the piece along and builds momentum to the inevitable conclusion.

The noir genre has had somewhat of renaissance in recent years; thanks in part to big-budget film’s such as Sin City (Robert Rodriguez); it is once again stylistically acceptable. A lot of effort has been made in this piece to create this especially with the cinematography and it is very successful in this respect. Visually it maintains a consistent black & white noir look with a generous use of backlight. It also has that dark and menacing feel we have come to expect.

However; I can’t help but feel this is noir for noir’s sake…and it would be nice to see some of the film-makers own creative flair come into play. All that said, this piece shows some promise and I look forward to what this production team will do next.

Dealt
Dealt is documentary about the life & works of Blind magician Richard Turner; ‘One of the world’s greatest card magicians…’

Richard Turner’s colorful, often bizarre and always entertaining life is one a filmmaker could only dream to script, but this is not a story of fiction. Tracing all the way back to Richard’s childhood as he struggled with losing his vision, to his discovery of magic and being mentored by Dai Vernon – known as “the only man to fool Houdini” – this film will explore Richard’s seemingly impossible journey of overcoming obstacles and the relentless dedication it took to achieve his dream.

Review: Motivational Growth (2013)

Originally reviewed for Battle Royale With Cheese

Motivational Growth‘ is the 2013 dark comedy/horror film from Writer/Director Don Thacker and has already been well received on the festival circuit; winning several awards.

motgrowth1

The story revolves around Ian Folivor (Adrian DiGiovanni); a reclusive slacker who dispels his own schizophrenic, self-effacing view of the world. The film opens with an excellent stylised montage of retro trash TV as Folivor flicks between channels on his old TV set ‘Kent’; his only companion as he spends his life on the couch. When the set malfunctions Folivor attempts to bring an end to his miserable existence; he wakes up after knocking himself unconscious only to discover The Mold (voiced by horror veteran Jeffrey Combs) is talking to him. He starts to take advice from The Mold and begins to clean up his act but as the story continues we see this relationship turn sinister; think Little Shop of Horrors but without the songs.   Continue reading
