Review: The War Doctor. Vol 4 – Casualties of War

It was so bitter sweet listening to this one. Knowing with each world we were hearing the last performance of the War Doctor and what I think is the last of John Hurt at Big Finish.

I didn’t catch the first instalment of the ‘Running Through Corridors’ story, so wasn’t sure exactly what to expect.
I know of Robert Shearman & Toby Hadoke and have had the pleasure of interviewing them for my podcast; both had mentioned the book and I had always meant to get round to it. So when the second instalment came out and Mad Norwegian Press asked me to review it I jumped at the chance.

Death At Christmas – A Doctor Who audio drama!
Death at Christmas is the second seasonal Doctor Who audio drama to be produced, written and directed by Doctor Squee of the Gallifrey Stands Podcast following last years The Time Trap.
As the Doctor & companion Orla head back to Earth for her Dad’s funeral, they reminisce on how they met. The Doctor had just regenerated and found himself crashing into Orla’s life. Meanwhile the new health minister is unveiling a drug that could be the cure for Orla’s Dad’s cancer. But is this cure too good to be true, or could it be deadlier than the cancer itself? Added to this, is one of the Doctors oldest enemies manipulating it all from behind the scenes and if so can the Doctor pull it together after the change to stop him?

Going into series 12 of Jago & Lightfoot, I was reminded of Supergirl. In the TV version of Supergirl they recently had a guest appearance from her cousin Superman for 2 episodes. It’s now the mission of that show to prove it can still stand on its own after the Man of Steel guest appears. How do you top an arc from one of that worlds most beloved characters?

The 21st Century is where everything changes and Big Finish are ready.
When Big Finish brought back Torchwood in audio form, it was a stunning success. 1-hour standalone stories that concentrated on a different member of the team. Imaginative, entertaining and totally in keeping in the legacy of the BBC Three classic show.
So when they announced they were going to do a 2-hour special featuring all your favourite Torchwood characters (bar Owen) from both the original TV run and characters they had invented just for the audios for celebrate Torchwood turning 10; I was SO in!

Review: Doctor Who – Destiny of the Doctor (The Complete Adventure)

2013, the year we had all waited for when Doctor Who was turning a history-making 50 years old. We got to see Two regenerations, Two new doctors, an amazing multiple-doctor story on TV and another on audio with Big Finish. Everyone wanted a part of the celebrations and to put out something amazing. The now defunct Audio Go was no exception. Partnering up with Big Finish they came up with the idea of releasing one audio story a month; based on one of the then Eleven Doctors. As the anniversary was in November, starting at the beginning of the year in January made it all work perfectly. They assembled companions from most of the Doctors as the narrators for the stories, aside from the 9th (although getting in Nicholas Briggs is no bad replacement) and pared them with another actor to co-star. It seemed like quite a coo as well to get the then current companion Jenna Coleman involved. A big shout of to all of the wonderful writers in this set too including Andrew Smith, Matt Fitton and Nev Fountain to name just a few.

The really impressive thing about the War Doctor range (yes apart from getting John Hurt to do it, the amazing scripts, wonderful directing and music) is the fact that each set whilst following a through-line has its own unique feel and theme. Agents of Chaos is no exception. The idea of having people and items that add a wild card to an already chaotic universe beset by the Time War is inspired.

Big Finish – Doctor Who: The Chimes of Midnight Limited Vinyl Edition

When Big Finish first got the rights to add the 8th Doctor to their line-up it was such an exciting moment. At the time we only had one TV outing for this Doctor and a few books. Yes, the first adventure sets a tone for a Doctor but there was still so much to know about him. So once we were getting 8th Doctor audio’s what would they do with him? Some of these first audio’s seemed to lean into the suggested psychic powers from the TV movie; others tended more toward a sense of mystery, but the best included a heavy sense of wonder and excitement to them and an adventuring spirit buoyed on by his new companion Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Pollard (Edwardian Adventurer).
Review: David Brent – Life on the Road (2016)

When I heard Ricky Gervais was bringing back his lead character from ‘The Office’ I was nervous. I love the original Office and Brent was such an amazing creation I was worried to see if Brent could pull it off again. Seeing his comic relief video a few years ago gave me hope.
