Review: Hurt (2021)

Review by Paul Grammatico

Hurt: A Lengthy Labor of Halloween Havoc

Halloween is an interesting time that many people circle on their calendar. It is a time for letting loose, impersonating a fictions person or entity for a day, watching scary movies, giving out candy to the youngsters, or even going out with some friends to partake and participate in some Halloween-themed amusement park filled with haunted houses and sideshows. The parks were one of my favourites as it was fun to see my friends (and myself) receive various jump scares when various costumed ghouls would jump out at you from just about everywhere. Despite all the theatrical terror and menace, it was all in good fun. Hurt, a Halloween horror film provided by Zed Filmworks and distributed by Gravitas Ventures, provides a small-town Halloween fair that a soldier and his wife go back to as it was one of their regular haunts growing up. This time, however, the results are far different.

Review: We Need To Do Something (2021)

Review by Paul Grammatico

Natural disasters are never a fun event. Growing up in tornado country, I’ve had my fair share of severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornado watches and warnings. When I experienced a tornado, we had to huddle in the primary room in the house as there was no basement or cellar available. As the tornado ripped past our cottage, the vulnerability at the hands of mother nature along with its aftermath was something to behold. Produced by The Coven and distributed by IFC Midnight, We Need to Do Something gives us a taste of not only forces of nature and darkness that are beyond our humanity, but how a trapped family displays its dysfunction.

Review: Everybody’s Talking About Jamie – coming to Amazon Prime September 17th

Inspired by true events (based on BBC Three‘s 2011 documentary Jamie: Drag Queen at 16), Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is the film adaptation of the award-winning hit West-End musical about Jamie New (Max Harwood), a teenager in a working class English town with a dream of life on stage.

While his classmates plan their livelihoods after graduation, Jamie contemplates revealing his secret career ambition as a fierce and proud drag queen. His best friend Pritti (Lauren Patel) and his loving mum (Sarah Lancashire) shower him with endless support while local drag legend Miss Loco Chanelle (Richard E. Grant) mentors him toward his debut stage performance. But it’s not all rainbows for Jamie as his unsupportive dad (Ralph Ineson), an uninspired career advisor (Sharon Horgan), and some ignorant school kids attempt to rain on his sensational aspirations. In rousing and colourful musical numbers, Jamie and his community inspire one another to be more accepting, and to see the value in facing adversity and stepping out of the darkness into the spotlight.

Review – Kringle Time

Kringle Time is a new dark comedy feature debut from director Matthew Lucas, who self-produced and financed the project with writer Zan Gillies. The film is out now in North America on TVOD, BluRay & DVD from Gravitas Ventures.

When Kringles (Vernon Wells, “The Road Warrior,” “Commando”) — the singing, dancing snowman on a popular kids’ show — drops dead on live TV, a citywide crisis brings several small town characters out of the woodwork. To keep the ship afloat, a down-on-his-luck station manager named Jerry (Benny Elledge, “Happy,” “Gotham”) must don the Kringles costume himself. But the cast and crew are rooting against him, the added pressure is too much for his girlfriend (Gigi Edgley, “Farscape”), and the mayor (Jeff Wincott, “Night Heat”) won’t stop pestering him about building a pointless memorial statue. To make matters worse, the ghost of Kringles returns to haunt Jerry, revealing a dark secret that he carried to the grave. With Kringles’ reputation on the line, Jerry has to choose what his legacy will be as the man beneath the mask.
